The Problem: you are paying for stock nobody uses

Hospitals buy consumables that go into bins unopened, and once an item enters a bin it leaves the record. Without visibility at the point of disposal, the cost is invisible to procurement, to finance and to the people setting waste targets.

Financial Waste

NSW Health spends $2.3 billion a year on medical and surgical supplies. Novecom modelling estimates $100 to $168 million is written off through expiry or damage.

Environmental Waste

Clinical waste is expensive and carbon-intensive. Poor segregation leads to recyclable materials being incinerated.

Data Waste

Manual audits are costly and infrequent. Most decisions are made with incomplete or outdated information.

Surewaste health care waste management system

Real world applications

Featured Case Study

Optimising operating theatre surgical kit contents using SureWaste analytics

SureWaste units were installed in active operating theatres to record what was going into the bin unused. Procedures were selected at random across orthopaedic, cardiothoracic, neurological and general abdominal surgery, with capture quality supervised throughout by a qualified medical engineer.

Outcome
Each two-hour surgery discarded $20 to $40 of unused consumables, often the same items across multiple procedures. Modelled across the health district studied, that is $1,068,413 a year.

Our Story

SureWaste came out of a two-year SBIR-funded partnership with NSW Health, HealthShare and eHealth. It began as a recycling question. The data showed it was a procurement question, so that is what SureWaste was built to answer.

With more than 30 devices deployed and 308 days of live data, SureWaste is ready to scale.
